Over the next few days thousands of us will be making lists and checking them twice… of resolutions, that is. Trying to figure out our priorities and evaluating what worked and what did not work in 2014. Personally I have used several tools that have helped filter through all the distractions to focus simply on who I am and who I want to be… growing in Christ and in character. I would encourage you to use one or all of these tools to prepare your heart for the New Year.
1. My One Word (myoneword.com)
I would encourage you to poke around the website a bit and probe your heart. Scribble down a few words and see what floats to the surface. It is a great way to simplify the resolution process by just focusing on one character-building trait or Biblical concept.
I began using the “one word” concept in 2012. For the entire year I focused on being in awe of God. Last year my word was “listen.” That played out on Faith Reboot with the 30 Biblical Meditation Challenge in July. I also created a #PinYourResolution board on my Pinterest page (connect with me by searching “Brittney-Switala-HisRadio”.) The board is full of articles and quotes having to do with listening to God and listening well to others. It was through my research on listening to God I discovered my now favorite blog Beliefs of the Heart with Sam Williamson, author of Is Sunday School Destroying Our Kids? I talked about his blog in 5 Blogs to Change Your Life (or At Least the Way You Think!)
My One Word 2015- “Unashamed.” My word came to me almost immediately. I am asking the Lord to help me feel free, without shame before God or man. Also, the verse Romans 1:16 comes to mind, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
I have twice gone through Chalene Johnson’s 30-Day Challenge and have found it immensely helpful. Chalene is best known for Beachbody fitness, but she has branched out into motivational speaking and encouragement for a well prioritized home and life. This resource is not a “Christian” resource so to speak, yet it encourages a laser focus on your #1 life priority (faith in Christ for the Believer) and helps participants filter the rest of life down from your top priority. This is a free resource. You will need to sign-up to receive daily emails over the course of the 30 days from Chalene in order to participate.
3. YouVersion (free App and bible.com)
YouVersion is the most popular Bible app in the world. It is a great place to go if you are looking for accountability on sticking with a Bible reading plan in the New Year. One thing you may not realize is there are many varieties of Bible reading plans which do not require a year-long commitment. There are New Year’s themed devotions which last just a few days, devos from Christian artists like Lecrae and even topical devotions on family and parenting. I have found I feel motivated to do a longer reading plan (21 or 30 days) after I have had success with a seven-day plan. Finding “friends” on the YouVersion app who are also reading and sharing scripture is very encouraging.
4. ScriptureTyper (free/pro-version App and scripturetyper.com
I became familiar with the ScriptureTyper app when our church memorized a passage in Ephesians and a friend shared he used the app. I fell in love with it because it is competitive and multi-sensory. There is a feature which allows you to make your own picture-driven flashcards. Another feature allows you to record and play back your voice (on repeat if you choose) saying the verse. The primary feature is the “typer” in which you simply type the first letter of each word in the verse and are scored according to your level of mastery.
Exciting ScriptureTyper NEWS! Although ScriptureTyper has a free version I personally love the pro-version. I have the opportunity to give away a free copy of the pro ScriptureTyper app (a $9.99 value) and will do a random giveaway when Faith Reboot hits 200 Facebook likes!
Free tools to reboot your faith…. A giveaway… Want more exciting news?! Next Monday I will be making a big announcement about some growth happening here at the blog I can’t wait to share with you!
